The Nash books don't have the kind of post-graduate musicological/cultural analysis that Guralnick specializes in, but I don't really need too much of that stuff myself. She doesn't avoid scandal, but she doesn't wallow in it either, and what emerges is a balanced portrait of a complex, troubled man. Now Guralnick has brought forth the second and final volume of the singer’s story, Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley, picking up two years after he left off. Nash does extensive research and talks directly to dozens of the people who knew Elvis best, and the former two books in particular really provide a solid portrait of what Elvis was like as a person, how he thought, and how he viewed the world and himself. I consider the three books by Alanna Nash ( Elvis and the Memphis Mafia, Baby Let's Play House, and The Colonel as the best books about Elvis. His books are not bad, but I wouldn't rank them as the authoritative biographies of Elvis. Donnan In-depth study of elviss early life. In the last ten years of Elvis' life the Colonel was arguably one of the worst personal managers in entertainment history, and Guralnick is not nearly as critical of him as he should be. He also is something of an apologist for the Colonel.

Guralnick relies a lot on secondary sources rather than original research.
